The mounting plate can be used to mount smoke or PIR detectors in the ceiling. The mounting plate is made so that it is easy to hide a cable under the device if you use BUS-based devices. For wireless devices, on the other hand, the mounting plate separates the antenna from the mounting surface, thereby improving the signal range.
