Tips and tricks for surveillance cameras in the home
-
Power and network via the same cable
Consider cameras that support Power over Ethernet (PoE). With PoE, you only need to run a single cable to the camera, as it supplies both power and network.
It saves you installation costs and provides your camera with a stable power supply that allows it to perform more resource-intensive operations, such as advanced image analysis and stronger night vision.
It's one of the things that makes a professional camera far more powerful than a battery-powered camera.
-
Advanced image analysis
Look for cameras that offer built-in image analysis. These cameras are intelligent enough to distinguish between a spider crawling across the lens and a person walking around your garden.
It helps reduce the number of false alarms and keep you informed about real threats.
-
Good night vision
Choose cameras with strong night vision. Some cameras are designed with powerful infrared (IR) illumination that can "see" in the dark. This enables them to deliver clear and detailed black and white images, even in low light or total darkness.
The best cameras are able to spy on people using IR - and simultaneously film in color at night, which makes it much easier to recognize the person, the clothes, the color of the car - or even read a number plate.
-
Consider the camera type
Dome cameras have been popular in the past, but they can have drawbacks when it comes to night vision.
The lens and light source are located on the same side of the dome glass, which can cause glare if the dome is not perfectly clean.
Instead, consider bullet or turret cameras, which offer better night vision.
-
Weatherproof design
If your camera is to be installed outdoors, it must have a robust and weatherproof design.
Cameras with IP66 or IP67 ratings are dust and waterproof and can handle harsh weather conditions.
-
Location
The first step might be to place an outdoor camera on an outside corner. Often, however, the camera is much better positioned in an inner corner.
In this way, the camera can keep an eye on two walls - and at the same time the entire area in between. And as a bonus, the intruder can't get behind the camera either.
-
High resolution
Professional cameras must offer high resolution. If the cameras don't have zoom, you shouldn't go below 4MP outdoors.
The higher the resolution - the more you can enlarge the day you need to see the details of your recordings.
-
The right lens
The camera field of view is like a funnel. How fast the funnel spreads is determined by the camera lens. In other words, it's the camera's glasses.
If you film areas that are not relevant, you waste part of the camera's fine resolution. In some cases, too wide a field of view can even directly disturb the image quality due to glare.
Typically you have to choose the lens based on the camera's horizontal field of view (Horizontal FOV) If you are in doubt - just ask.
-
Audio recording and two-way communication
Some cameras offer audio recording or even two-way communication.
Combined with intelligent cameras that respond to people but not dogs, it can be extremely effective to "welcome" when a person strays after 10pm. It also helps to record sound as additional evidence.
-
Local storage and cloud connection
Consider a solution that offers the connection via the cloud but video is stored locally. It provides the best of both worlds:
Easy connection when you are out in the world - and without subscription costs.
