The detector is perfect for areas where you want to create an “invisible wall” that reacts when someone passes through. Typically used along buildings, at gates, walkways, narrow entrances and similar places where regular detectors either cover too wide an area or generate too many false alarms.

Ajax outdoor curtain detectors
Curtain Outdoor Jeweller is designed to create a narrow, precise and targeted security zone around a building or an area. Instead of monitoring a wide field, the detector only registers movement along a narrow line, making it ideal for walkways, driveways, narrow sides of buildings and confined spaces. The combination of two PIR sensors, microwave radar and Ajax's advanced software provides stable operation in environments where wind, animals, vegetation and lighting conditions would normally cause issues for standard motion detectors.
Two PIR sensors combined with microwave radar
The detector uses two PIR elements that detect changes in heat and movement, but in outdoor environments such signals can be affected by sun-warmed surfaces, reflections or temperature fluctuations. Therefore the PIR sensors are supplemented with a 24 GHz K-band microwave transmitter that actively measures movement in the area based on the Doppler effect. The microwave can distinguish between real motion and temporary disturbances, significantly increasing stability. This combined method makes the detector better suited for outdoor use than pure PIR solutions.
Adjustable range of 8–12 meters
The range can be adjusted directly on the device via a physical slider. This allows you to tailor the monitored field precisely to the task at hand. If the detector needs to cover a narrow access path, the range can be reduced to avoid detection farther out. For larger areas, for example along a fence or a building, the range can be expanded to the full reach of up to 12 meters. This flexibility makes it possible to create accurate perimeter protection without affecting nearby areas.
Narrow 8° detection angle
The detector covers a very narrow field of roughly 8° horizontally. That means it creates a “detection wall” that only reacts if a person moves through this narrow zone. This is a big advantage in environments where wider sensors would trigger far too many unnecessary alerts. For example along facades where passersby or random movements should not be registered, or in carports and passageways where you want to focus on a specific direction of movement.
Pet-immunity up to approximately 100 cm height
If the detector is mounted at 1 meter height and set to Pet-mode, it ignores movements close to the ground — for example from dogs, cats and other animals up to about 100 cm tall. This reduces the risk of false alarms in gardens or areas where animals roam. Pet-mode also changes the detector's internal algorithm so it focuses more on human walking height rather than lower movements.
AI-based SmartDetect to reduce false alarms
SmartDetect analyzes movement in multiple stages, assessing size, speed and motion patterns. The system actively tries to distinguish between people, animals, leaves, snow, branches in the wind and other types of signals that can cause problems for traditional outdoor sensors. The software adapts dynamically to the surroundings and helps maintain accuracy even in changing weather and lighting conditions.
Temperature compensation for stable operation
As temperatures fluctuate, PIR sensors' sensitivity naturally changes. Curtain Outdoor therefore continuously compensates for temperature changes so detection remains stable from −25°C to +60°C. This means the detector can be used year-round without losing sensitivity in extreme heat or cold.
Advanced anti-masking
The anti-masking system constantly monitors the front of the detector. If someone attempts to block the view by covering the lens with tape, spray, fabric or other materials, the system detects the change and sends an alarm. This is important for outdoor installations where an intruder might try to “neutralize” the sensor before approaching the building.
Tamper protection and accelerometer
The tamper switch detects if someone tries to remove the detector from its SmartBracket. In addition, the unit contains an accelerometer that can detect movements, shakes or attempts to loosen the sensor without opening the housing. This increases security for installations in exposed areas where tampering attempts may occur.
Long wireless range — up to 1,700 meters
Curtain Outdoor communicates via Ajax's Jeweller radio, which is optimized for low power consumption and long range. With up to 1,700 meters of communication distance in open terrain, the detector can be used on large properties, at outbuildings, around fences or in commercial areas with wide physical spread. The system automatically regulates transmit power so batteries last longer.
Frequency hopping and encrypted communication
To protect against interference and jamming, the detector automatically switches between several frequency channels. All data is sent with block encryption and a dynamic key, making it difficult for unauthorized parties to intercept or disrupt communication with the hub.
Battery life up to approx. 3 years
Curtain Outdoor is powered by two CR123A batteries, which are included. Low power consumption and periodic data transmissions allow operation for up to approximately three years, depending on environment and activity. When the battery is running low, the system notifies both users and installers.
IP55
The detector is IP55-rated and designed to withstand rain, dust and moisture. The included hood protects the anti-masking sensors from rain and snow so the function continues to work in poor weather conditions. This makes it suitable for installations on facades, in driveways and other outdoor locations with direct exposure.
Flexible mounting options
The detector can be mounted directly on a wall, in corners or with the supplied angle bracket, depending on the desired monitoring direction. Mounting height can vary between 1 and 2.4 meters depending on the intended function, and the installation can be adapted for private homes, businesses and outdoor passage areas.
